Elegant & Vintage Sliding Sash Windows
What is a Sash Window?
The sash window is often found in Georgian and Victorian styled properties and is most commonly made up of two sashes that slide up and down. Traditionally the sashes were held open or closed by cords and lead weights concealed in the surrounding frame.
Benefits of a Sash Window
The modern sash window retains traditional aesthetics but has improved functionality, performance and security. The sash window is considered the most attractive window with its slim sculptured profiles, decorative horns and astragal bars. The modern sash window uses spring balances to control the operation of the sliding sashes. This new mechanism can tilt both sashes inwards for easy cleaning.
Sash windows are available in a vast range of colours and finishes to compliment any home. Window frames can be dual coloured to suit both the interior and exterior of your property.
UPVC frames which have been injected with colour at the extrusion stage to give a smooth coloured finish. Available in White or Cream as standard.
Available in six standard colours the windows are foiled on both sides or one side with a white interior, our woodgrain finishes are designed to mimic the grained texture and appearance of traditional timber. Available in White, Cream, Rosewood, Irish Oak, Light Oak and Black.
We offer Farrow & Ball’s whole colour range so you can really give your windows that authentic touch.
A wide range of traditional hardware is available in a number of different colours. Lift hooks are usually fitted to the bottom of the sash and allow for easy lifting of the lower sash. Key locking sash locks secure the top and bottom sashes together. D handles or Ring Pulls are fitted to the top sash and help to slide the top sash downwards. Restrictors are most commonly used on upstairs windows as it reduces the amount the bottom sash can open.
Decorative sash horns are fitted to the bottom of the top sash and make a beautiful feature.
All windows are double glazed and achieve an A Rating as standard.
The glass is made up of:
– 4mm Planibel A Hardcoat Low E Internally
– 16mm Super Spacer & Argon Gas Filling
– 4mm Pilkington Optiwhite Externally
Georgian bars can be added to the window to maintain its traditional charm. The most popular is the surface mounted astragal bar which looks the most authentic.
The astragal bar option is designed to give the effect of individual panes of glass by using a ‘back-to-back spacer’ inside the glass unit first of all splitting the single unit in to multiple squares without the need for individual units.
Once this grid layout has been included inside the glass unit and the unit fitted in to the window, we then fix a surface mounted PVCu bar to both external faces of the glass unit to give the full authentic appearance.
The Internal fretwork is another type of glazing bar used to give an authentic look to the sliding sash windows. This bar is located inside the glass unit and is used to give the window a similar appearance to the astragal bar but with much easier cleaning.
Toughened glass is about 5 times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness.
Pilkington Toughened Glass is manufactured by subjecting the final glass size to a heating and cooling treatment.
A balance of high compressive stresses at the surface and tensile stresses in the centre of the glass increases its strength.
All lower panes of a sash window are toughened as standard as they generally lower to the ground than other windows styles.
